Performance of IE2 standardised motors

On 16 June 2011, a new regulation IEC 60034-30-2008, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), came into force in the EU. The regulation characterizes the different efficiency classes and is intended for standardized single-speed three-phase asynchronous motors with short armature for motor power from 0.75 to 375 kW. This newly established standard provides global harmonization of the energy efficiency classes of electric motors and is intended to regulate and reduce energy consumption.

From this date onwards, neither the manufacturer nor the supplier may supply IE1 efficiency class motors (formerly designated EFF2) to the European Union market. All new motors must be labelled with the IE2 efficiency class on the motor label and meet the efficiency limits set by the standard. The standard also changes the way in which the voltage is marked on the motor label. It is no longer possible to indicate the voltage with an extended tolerance (e.g.: 390-410 V). Only one rated efficiency (IE code) will now be assigned to a fixed voltage/frequency/power. In the case of motors with more than one combination, an IE (rated efficiency) can be assigned for each combination. In addition, the measurement methods used to determine the efficiency of motors are changed, see details in IEC 60034-2-1.

The standard covers all motor types see below:
- single speed three phase asynchronous short circuit motors
- voltage <1000 V, frequency 50 Hz / 60 Hz
- motor power rating PN : 0.75 kW to 375 kW
- 2,4 or 6 pole motors
- motors rated for S1 (continuous operation) or S3 (intermittent load) with a rated load capacity of 80% or more
- motors capable of operating with mains power directly
- for all types of IM shapes

Regulation of IE2 efficiency fan motors is only possible with a frequency converter. Transformer regulators regulating by changing the motor voltage are no longer allowed. Thermal protection of the fans is provided by thermistors connected to the motor connection terminal and these must be connected to the corresponding thermal protection relay.

The IEC regulations also apply to fans supplied by Elektrodesign ventilators Ltd. According to the statements of the individual fan manufacturers, all newly supplied fans with standardised motors comply with IEC 60034-30-2008. Fans purchased before this date with IE1 motor efficiency are allowed to be installed in the HVAC system according to the regulation.
