New EU Regulation*
as a transition from EU Regulation 327/2011 to EU Regulation 2024/1834 - sets strict requirements for fan efficiency and incorporates environmental considerations into product design to improve energy efficiency throughout the product's lifetime.
Scope of regulation
Fans with an electrical input between 125 W and 500 kW (≥ 125 W and ≤ 500 kW) at their point of highest efficiency, even when integrated into other products.
Efficiency requirements and documentation
Fans shall achieve a specified minimum efficiency at the optimum operating point, expressed as the ratio of air power to electrical power consumption. This efficiency should be specified in documentation for manufacturers, distributors and users, including details of reparability.
Identification of compliant fans
Compliance is CE marked and only CE compliant products may be sold in Europe.
Impact on existing appliances
Manufacturers of air handling units must ensure that the fans used meet minimum efficiency standards, even if the units are already regulated.
Implications of the new regulation
The new standards aim to improve fan efficiency while reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Further savings can be achieved by adjusting the air volume according to the actual demand.
Implementation timetable
The regulation came into force in summer 2024 and, after a two-year transition period, compliance must be achieved by mid-2026.
Global impact of the Regulation
This Regulation applies to all products sold in the EU regardless of their origin. The exception is products sold outside the EU.
* Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/1834 of 3 July 2024 implements Directive 2009/125/EC on ecodesign requirements for fans driven by motors with an electrical input between 125 W and 500 kW. It also repeals Commission Regulation (EU) No 327/2011.
